Germanwings ponders Polish future

Germanwings, the German budget airline, is considering a major expansion in Poland.

The low-cost airline already operates a number of services from three Polish cities - Katowice, Krakow and the capital, Warsaw, which have proved extremely popular with passengers.

As a result, the airline is considering setting up a permanent base in the country, which would see a number of planes and staff based there.

Andreas Engel, a spokesman for Germanwings, believes demand for more services linking Poland with destinations in western Europe is extremely high.

"For us Poland is the most important country in the region," he added.

So far this year, 97,000 passengers have travelled on the budget airline's cheap flights between Cologne and Stuttgart in Germany and its three Polish destinations.

Mr Engel hopes that in total more than 200,000 passengers will travel on the budget airline's flights to the new European Union member-state this year.

The low-cost airline hopes to expand its Polish services next year, but has so far failed to disclose the location of its planned base.

Since its accession to the European Union in May 2004, a number of European low-cost airlines have identified Poland as a potential area of growth.

In May, rival budget airline Ryanair launched four new services to Poland from the UK.

The Irish airline flies daily from London Stansted to Gdansk, Bydgoszcz, Szczecin and Rzeszow.

In addition, another European budget airline, Wizz Air, also operates flights from Liverpool and London Luton to Warsaw and Katowice, with connecting flights to Krakow.
