Spotting at EPWA
General information

The F.Chopin international airport in Warsaw is the biggest polish airport (61% of passenger traffic in 2005). All operations takes place on two crossing runways: 11/29 and 15/33. There are many places for spotting around the airport, most of them are unoficial. There is an official mountain for spotters (near RWY 11) and visitors terrace in terminal building (entrance cost is 3 zlotys ~ 1$).

Attention: the new terminal (T2) is under construction, also aprons are overhaul. Becouse of that, there might be diversioned traffic near the airport or some spotting places could be unavailable. Especially visitors terrace is preparing to be closed (in new terminal there will be glazed gallery).

Information about runways:

15/33 - 3690 x 60 m / 12106 x 197 ft, concrete, ILS for RWY 33 (WA 329 110.30)

11/29 - 2800 x 50 m / 9186 x 164 ft, concrete, ILS for RWY 11 (WAS 112 109.90)

How to reach the airport
The airport is located in Warsaw, only few kilometers from city centre. You can get there by bus from the city centre (bus lines 175 from central railway station and 188 from "Metro Politechnika" station), by special airport lines (for example from some hotels) or by taxi (the cost shouldn't exceed 30 zlotys if you are driving from centre).

While reaching terminal is simple, whereas reaching other places for spotting could be much more difficult. Of course you can get everywhere going on your foot, but this can take long hours.
Especially south and south-east sides of the airport are harder to get to: spotting places located there are at a certain distance from city communication lines; also side roads leading to those places could be difficult to pass by aftes rainfalls.

Timetables of city lines communication are available at [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]

Hotels
There are many hotels around the airport and in city, but only one of them have special advantages for spotters - access to current airport flight shedule database. It's located vis-a-vis terminal building.

Aviation traffic
Traffic at Warsaw airport is differentiate. Frequently airplanes are belong to LOT Polish Airlines and Eurolot. There are also few low-costs like Wizz, Germanwings,Sky Europe etc.

Unfortunately, except Polish Ailines B767, [????]

Spotting at EPWA

General Information

Warsaw Frederic Chopin (WAW/EPWA) International Airport is the biggest Polish airport (It had 61% of all Polish passanger traffic in 2005). There are two intersecting runways in use right now, those runways are: 11/29 and 33/15. Around the airport there are alot of unofficial spots that you can observe planes from. There is also a special "hill" for spotters and a viewing terrace (entrance fee is 3zl/1USD)

Warning: There is an intensive construction project going on in the form of Terminal 2 (T2), there is also alot of construction airside and on the roadways. Because of this one can expect alot of detours around the airport and because of this some of the spotting areas may not be accessible. The viewing deck will be closed although the exact date is not known. It will be replaced with an indoor viewing deck that has panoramic glass.

Runway data:

15/33 - 3690 x 60 m / 12106 x 197 ft, cement, ILS runway 33 (WA 329 110.30)

11/29 - 2800 x 50 m / 9186 x 164 ft, cement, ILS runway 11 (WAS 112 109.90)

How to get there:

The airport is located in NE part of Warsaw just a couple miles away from city center. You can get to the city center by city bus #175 or #188. Both lines make a final stop at the airport. City is also reachable by taxi cab. Taxi cab fare to city center shouldnt cost more than 20-30zl however this can be more expensive during the weekend or the night.

Getting to the terminal is not a problem, but getting to the other spotting places is hard. Of course you can get everywhere by foot but its a long walk. Generally its harder to get to the South and Southeast part of the airport but the spots are very good for spotting. In case of rain, the terrain gets muddy and its hard to get through by foot.

You can check out bus schedules at ZTM website.

Accomodations

Around the airport there are a few hotels, however specifically the best one is probably the Courtyard Inn by Marriott. which is located right by the terminal.

Air Traffic

Air traffic in Warsaw is metered. Legacy trunk carriers dominate but there are some LCC airlines that have a big presence. The most common airplanes are from LOT Polish and their regional subsidiary EuroLOT.

Unfortunately, except the LOT 767s, widebody aircraft are a rarity at EPWA.

There are some unusual guests such as a Tu-154M service to Moscow before noon operated by Russian state carrier Aeroflot). There are also government Tu-154s and Yak-40s that appear frequently along with military An-24 and T-28 Bryza aircraft. There is additional business jet traffic. In the summertime there are alot of charters from the Mediterranean region.

Air traffic is pretty much even throughout the week and theres not one specific day of the week that sees more traffic. However timewise, most traffic comes and goes between 6AM-10PM.

Photos from WAW can be viewed here:

Information about traffic

Hard to believe there is no live info in Warsaw about arrivals and departures via the Internet. However there is a display at the Courtyard Inn with all of this data.

However it is easy to know where the operations are taking place by calling up METAR at 022 650 2111 (Same rate as a local call).

Spotting at EWPA

Spotting (both taking photos and listening to ATC) is legal in Poland by definition. However sometimes local cops and airport security hassle spotters and tell them not to loiter or take photos for no apparent reason. However this is pretty much only for scare as they almost never come to the parts that are hard to get to.

Warsaw spotters are in an organization called just that. They have vests and ID cards. With the vest and ID card you dont have any special privelages but the police look at them friendlier even when an EL-AL Israel plane is in the area (in most airports Israeli planes are watched by their own security forces and anti-terrorists units. However a sidenote here is that EL-AL security do not have any authority outside their immediate aircraft even in the USA or the UK.)

Members of Warsaw Spotters can take a non-member under their wing so if you plan on shooting photos that are described below or you want to shoot pictures of EL-AL try to make contact with one of the members

Its always good to have some kind of ID on you in case the authorities stop you. People who do not know Polish should not wander off into spots that they could be stopped at.

Its good to remember that some areas around the airport are private property and their owners may not want anyone on them. On the south side of the airport there are summer houses and fields (under the runway 33 approach especially) The area right by the perimeter fence belongs to PPL (Polish Airports Authority)

General information about places to take photos

Perimeter is marked by:

1. Picket Fence, just like by Wirazowa street

2. Chain link fence - most of the airport

3. Cement wall - small fragment

Taking photos through the fence shouldnt be a problem and you can fit most lenses that have low focal lengths. The chain links are quite small and its not advised to step away from it and take photos. Of course you cant shoot through the wall. Using a stepladder is not recommended because the fence is too high and if you used it by the wall you will look suspicious.

Like it was said before, there are 2 intersecting runways. If there are takeoffs on one runway there are usually landings on the other. Exception is nighttime when only runway 15/33 is in use.

You choose the place to take photos according to operations

-Runway 11 - Eastward operations - Arrivals (frequently), rarely for takeoffs usually when there is construction on other runway

-Runway 25 - Eastward ops - takeoffs (often), if theres a strong southern wind there could be landings (rarely)

-Runway 29 - Most takeoffs (very often), with wind in excess of 20kts from the west also landings (rarely)

Most often used configuration is 29 (takeoffs) / 33 (landings, takeoffs for 767 + larger aircraft), often 11/15, others configs are rare.

Places to observe and photograph

MAP

1. Viewing Deck

If you dont like photography choose this place. If you want to take photos this is also the place to check out but usually before noon. Youre guaranteed that no matter the operations you wont miss a thing.

Getting there: Easy, you get to Terminal 1 with the city bus or taxi, the entrance is on your left by the domestic terminal area

What you see: Takeoffs, landings 11/15/33/29, big part of ground operations

Lense: Wide-angle for ground ops up to 300mm for takeoffs and landings

Problems getting there: None, however could be trouble bringing in a tripod. Open from dawn till dusk.

Perimeter: railing

Sun: Unfortunately youre shooting into the sun most of the day, however you can work with different angles. Best time is before no

Jutro wiecej, ide spac bo juz 4 nad ranem na Florydzie hehe Shocked
