PARIS (Dow Jones)--European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co NV reaffirmed Wednesday that it could ask shareholders later this year for authorization to raise capital to strengthen its balance sheet, possibly including raising cash from investors through a rights issue. The company also blamed the weak dollar for giving its main competitor, Boeing Co. of the U.S., a strong competitive advantage in markets.
At a press conference for Airbus, EADS' wholly-owned commercial aircraft division, EADS' Chief Financial Officer Hans-Peter Ring said it is too early to say exactly what form the capital enhancement will take.
"We will consider all instruments. There might be something outside of a capital increase as well," Ring said.
Under persistent questioning by reporters on this matter, both he and EADS chief executive Louis Gallois declined to be more specific about whether core shareholders would provide the capital or about what other means may be used...
...Fabrice Bregier, Airbus's Chief Operating Officer and second-in-command to Airbus and EADS CEO Gallois, told Dow Jones Newswires that the possible measures don't include opening up Airbus's capital through an initial public offering.
